The car market peak season resumes, did new energy vehicles account for nearly 30%?

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (referred to: CAAM) recently released data show that in September, China’s auto production and sales were 2.672 million and 2.61 million units, up 11.5% and 9.5% respectively, and 28.1% and 25.7%, respectively.

For the overall performance of the car market in the first three quarters of this year, the CCA Deputy Secretary General Chen Shihua said: “In the third quarter, with the release of the purchase tax-related policies, as well as the intensive introduction of local government promotion fee policy, car production and sales in a single month of rapid growth, the overall trend of ‘off-season is not off, the peak season reappears’.

From January to September, the cumulative sales of passenger cars of independent brands reached 8.163 million units, up 26.6% year-on-year, with a market share of 48.1%. From January to September, the total sales of autonomous brand passenger cars were 8.163 million units, up 26.6% year-on-year, with a market share of 48.1% and a 4.7% increase in share over the same period last year. Once upon a time, the market share of independent car brands declined due to factors such as the overall market entering negative growth and increased structural consumer squeeze. Data show that as of October 2019, the independent brand passenger cars have been negative growth for 16 consecutive months, and the share of independent brands in 2019 and 2020 is less than 40%. It is only in 2021 that the market share of autonomous brand passenger cars gradually rises to 44%. This further indicates that independent brands have dominated in terms of market share.

Talking about the reasons for the rapid growth of autonomous brand passenger cars, Chen Shihua believes that this is inseparable from the good performance of autonomous brands in the field of new energy vehicles.

New energy: monthly sales exceeded 700,000 units for the first time currently, China’s new energy vehicle market growth rate continues to be higher than the general market. Among them, in September, new energy vehicle production and sales hit a new record high. Data show that in September, China’s new energy vehicle production and sales were 755,000 units and 708,000 units, an increase of 1.1 times and 93.9% respectively, with a market share of 27.1%; from January to September, China’s new energy vehicle production and sales were 4.717 million units and 4.567 million units, an increase of 1.2 times and 1.1 times respectively, with a market share of 23.5%. The rise in sales of new energy vehicles is also directly reflected in the sales performance of enterprises, compared with the same period of the previous year, the vast majority of enterprises show varying degrees of growth.

The reason for the current high growth of new energy vehicles, traditional car companies continue to launch new models to enrich the product matrix and provide consumers with more choices, which is an important guarantee for the growth of new energy vehicles.
